What is self publishing?
It is basically publishing your own work as the author, rather than using a third part publisher.
Should you self publish?
There is a complete divide on this debate. I personally would self publish rather than use a traditional publisher, for many reasons:
- You get to maintain complete control over your work.
- You can work to your own set deadlines.
- You pay less out in royalties and are thus higher paid.
- Your work, stays as your work and you do not need to face the decision of having to change it.
- You can print on demand.
There are also some drawbacks to self-publishing:
- You are on your own with no backup support.
- You will have to market your work yourself.
- You will have to spend money before you make it.
If you are struggling with the decision of what to do, weigh up he pros and cons first. I personally would choose to self publish because i know about marketing and will therefore be able to market my own work. If you are not knowledgeable about marketing you can get someone to offer marketing advice.
I do not often recommend companies but having researched self publishers i have no problem recommending lulu.com. They are the leaders in print on demand, making self publishing easy for all authors and beginners.
